Performance with vocal feedback and radio transmissionance
In Recurrence I perform a vocal rendition of the Misfits’ American Nightmare, simultaneously recording and playing each iteration over the duration of the performance. Much like Alvin Lucier’s I am Sitting in a Room, the voice transforms to a resonant haunting of the room with each iteration. As the voice is increasingly reproduced by the rooms acoustics and dislocated from the enunciator, the performance shifts from one of subjectivity toward the structures that organize and condition speech. In this case the acoustics that carry the resonance of the singing voice. The words are peeled back and underlying it is the grotesque structure, containing the broken meaning of words and national identity as the feedback pushes each word into a lack of pronunciation, becoming more of itself and less intelligible at the same time.
